COSTUME, PROPS & SET DRESSING/MISE-EN-SCENE

Costume For the Film we only really need two sets of Clothing, one for each of the characters. Its important that the clothes signify key information about the characters as we plan not to have dialogue in the film. This is crucial for the audience to be able to 'understand' the characters.

Character 1; Central Protagonist: This character should be wearing vcry dull clothing, that are quite scruffy, his clothing should not give away too much about the character as the short film is all about the mysteriousness of the male. The male should probably wear a black top and blue jeans, wearing walking boots. This way there is not too much given away about the male as these are very average fashion style.

Character 2; Victim Girl: The girl should look like a typical sexually active blonde women, because as my research has shown me, it is this type of character that an audience would expect to be seen killed. I would like the women to be wearing a nice red dress, to signify blood and death, as she is about to be killed by the male. She should also be wearing high heels as these have a sexual appeal.
The girl will also need to be wearing make up that is smudged, to signify she has been crying and maybe dragged around by the male. This will mean having mascara running down her face.

Props/Set-Dressing
For Props we will probably need a few things.
Here is a list i have composed so far:

  • Tents
  • Bags
  • Objects to discard
  • Severed Arm
  • Chair
  • Ropes
  • Knives
These are the most important things we need so far for Signifiers and just to make the short film seem real and set somewhere which would be accessible to the audience, indicating that this could happen to them, further drawing them into the film if only to see what the final, if gruesome, outcome is.

Before we start to film we will have to set up the settings. The main three settings are the travellers campsite, the Abandoned building and the boys house.
The one that will be the hardest to set up i think will be the travellers campsite (disregarding setting up all of the tents as we are trying to borrow pop-up ones from friends and aquaintances which will reduce the assembly time greatly) as we have to try and make the campsite look like it has been trashed and i dont think we will acheive this effect by just placing the objects down onto the ground. We may have to gather up old objects and clothing that we do not need and then physically mess up the campsite, taking on the mind-set that we are robbing/destroying this campsite.

Another problem is if we use Fake Blood it could potentially stain. This could become a problem as if we do not clean it up after we have used it say, for instance on the ground, an unsuspecting member of the public could come across a huge patch of what they think is blood while innocently walking their dog and calll the Police which would waste their valuable time but also it could cause a lot of unnecessary worry as people would come to the conclusion that someone had been hurt really badly when they had not. To solve this problem we will try to be careful with our placement of the Fake Blood but also take some water with us to wash away the blood if it goes onto anything that we didnt bring with us. Hopefully this method should sort out this problem.

Another hard place to set up might be inside the boys house. We have to try and make it so that it has the feel of an operating theatre in a hospital but in someones house, so clean, white and sterile, but also have the lighting so that the audience cant tell that it looks like this at first but then eventually realise it as the twist is revealed. To bypass this problem we might leave the house as it normally is for the shot when he comes in just using a really low lighting, maybe just a candle to highlight his face, then stop filming, set up the kitchen with the surgical theatre theme and then re film using the blue lighting that Jowett has installed in his kitchen when we turn on the lights.

These are photos of the props we used to create mise-en-scene during the footage we shot in the house for the house scene.
